Do I need previous firearm experience?

No. The CFSC is designed for beginners as well as people who already have some firearm experience. Our instructors provide step-by-step classroom and hands-on training with deactivated firearms.

How old do I need to be?

You must be at least 12 years old to take the Non-Restricted Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC).

How long is the course?

Accepted Answer

The classroom portion is approximately 8 hours, plus additional time for the required written and practical examinations. We recommend planning for a full day.

Do I receive my PAL after completing the course?

Accepted Answer

No. Successfully completing the CFSC does not automatically issue you a PAL. After passing the required examinations, you use your course information when applying for your Possession and Acquisition Licence through the Canadian Firearms Program.

What happens if I don't pass?

Accepted Answer

A minimum score of 80% is required on the written and practical examinations. If you do not successfully complete the written examination, you will need to re-attend the course. If you are unsuccessful on the practical examination, you have 7 days to complete a retest.

What do I do after completing the course?

Accepted Answer

After successfully completing the course and examinations, you can complete your PAL application and submit the required information to the Canadian Firearms Program. Your PAL application is processed separately from the course.
